hostage to pleasure
He haunts me. The sniper. In my dreams, he is a black shadow with his eye focused on the scope of a rifle. Sometimes, he puts down the weapon and walks toward me. Sometimes, he even touches me. But most times, he presses the trigger. And kills me.
From the encrypted personal files of Ashaya Aleine

It’s becoming an obsession–my fascination with the sniper. Today, in the lab, I felt his breath on my nape. I am a scientist, a being of logic and reason, but part of me is convinced that he was real, that I could have raised a hand and brushed my fingertips across his lips.
— From the encrypted personal files of Ashaya Aleine

I heard the sniper’s voice against my ear when I woke today. He whispered sensual promises so savage, I can hardly believe these thoughts come from some corner of my own psyche. And yet they must. Because, at the end, he called me prey.
And told me to run.
— From the encrypted personal files of Ashaya Aleine

Why is this quote fantastic?

Because it’s from Nalini Singh, that’s why. LOL. I’ve adored Nalini Singh’s writing ever since I read her Guild Hunter books. And I couldn’t believe that I had doubts before I read her Psy-Changeling series. This series was my first foray into shape-shifters but then I read Slave to Sensation, the first book, and never looked back, as they say. Although technically, I did look back, if only to re-read and re-read them, especially HOSTAGE TO PLEASURE, which is my ultimate favorite from the series.

Also, I love how Ashaya always reveals her secret thoughts and yearnings in her sort-of diary. And the quotes above describe the shaky and yet powerfully consuming nature of her relationship with Dorian. I love it!

Book Summary:

Separated from her son and forced to create a neural implant that will mean the effective enslavement of her psychically gifted race, Ashaya Aleine is the perfect Psy–cool, calm, emotionless…at least on the surface. Inside, she’s fighting a desperate battle to save her son and escape the vicious cold of the PsyNet. Yet when escape comes, it leads not to safety, but to the lethal danger of a sniper’s embrace.

DarkRiver sniper Dorian Christensen lost his sister to a Psy killer. Though he lacks the changeling ability to shift into animal form, his leopard lives within. And that leopard’s rage at the brutal loss is a clawing darkness that hungers for vengeance. Falling for a Psy has never been on Dorian’s agenda. But charged with protecting Ashaya and her son, he discovers that passion has a way of changing the rules…

    1. I hope you’ll try her Psy-Changeling books. Although I read her Archangels series first, I like the Psy-Changeling series better. But they’re both amazing series with amazing writing from Nalini. 🙂

I would love to read your thoughts on this post.
