In just a few months Harp Evans will be officially coming of age and graduating from high school. She will be free from the mother that never wanted her, the house that never felt like home, and the disappointment of the last seventeen years. What she doesn’t know is that her mother has been holding onto a secret that has the potential to derail her dreams and destroy her already faulty sense of self.

A self-proclaimed recluse, Harp spends most of her time practicing the cello, in the hopes of earning a full scholarship that will grant her freedom, but will also send her away from her best friend Connor Williams, who is becoming more than just a friend.

As revelations are made, will Harp still feel the same way about leaving everyone that cares about her behind? Or will she continue to pursue the life she’s been dreaming of for as long as she can remember?

My Writing Process

My writing process begins with my imaginary friends. As a little girl, I would set scenes in my room with all my friends and I would act out different parts. As I got older, I got too cool for school and ditched those crazy cats. But, they never ditched me.

I wrote throughout high school and college. In fact, I started Harp’s Song in my college creative writing class and just pushed it aside. However, like my less than real friends, the story stayed with me. I finally found the courage and time to finish it, and, in doing so, all my imaginary friends are back in the forefront of my mind. I’m working on Harp’s Voice, the sequel to Harp’s Song as well as a new Young Adult project.

When an idea first comes to me, I play it out in my head with different characters and their physical descriptions. After that I put it all down on paper-sometimes just scribbling in the closest notebook I can find. Next I flush the story with an outline, find the perfect playlist, and start writing.

I listen to music constantly while I write. I can’t handle writing in silence. I need the bass to push me along and the lyrics to inspire me. Sometimes I will spend the entire day writing with one song on repeat because I connect with it so much.

Once the manuscript is complete, it’s off to the editor, beta readers, and back to me for editing … then more editing and beta reading … and yep, you guessed it, more editing before the finished project gets published and into your hands!

Publishing my first book has been an extremely gratifying and eye-opening process. I’ve learned so much along the way and can actually see the evolution of my writing, which is exciting because I know that if I keep at it, the sky’s my limit!

About the Author:

CShine_Headshot2Cassie Shine released her debut young adult novel, Harp’s Song in November 2013, finally finishing the short story she started in her college creative writing class … many, many moons ago. She has always been an avid reader and lover of music (yes, she was in the high school marching band). While she has a weak spot for all things teeny bopper, especially boy bands, she also loves classical, country, rock and well, pretty much everything.

After living in St. Louis for more than ten years, she and her husband packed up a U-Haul and headed west. They currently live in Orange County, CA with their furry kids Finnegan and Molly.

  1. Great post! I love hearing about author’s writing processes, they’re all so different. I love that Cassie listens to music while she writes, but I’m not sure I could listen to one song for an entire day!

    Thanks for hosting, Camille!
