The stunning follow-up to Darby’s Woo’d in Haste.

In all of Sussex—scratch that—in all of England, there is no one prettier than Kate Mansfield, and Peter Colburn, heir to the Duke of Orland, has known that since the age of 15. But since her vivacious nature comes with a temper to match, Peter has always masked his hunger for her behind ruthless teasing. As far as Kate is concerned, there is no one as annoying or as incredibly handsome as Peter. So when he surprises her with a sudden and romantic courtship, Kate is sure this must be his idea of a sick joke.

After all, he’s the one man who knows how flawed she really is. And the only man to whom she has ever been so attracted. It’s only after she rejects him that she realizes he might actually have been serious. And she just might be regretting her hasty decision. As Kate’s determination wars with her traitorous heart, it may be too late. Now she’s putting everything, including her reputation, on the line to give this accidental tragedy a happy ending.

Interview with Sabrina Darby:

Can you tell us more about Woo’d in Haste & Wed at Leisure?

These two novellas are inspired by Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. Woo’d in Haste tells the story of Katarina’s less famous sister, Bianca. Wed at Leisure tells Kate’s story. Adapting Shakespeare’s farce to Regency England and exploring the depths of what makes these sisters tick, was so much fun!

What are some of your favorite things about writing these two books?

Above all, I really loved exploring the dynamic between sisters. And then I had so much fun with the heroes. Luc, the hero of Woo’d in Haste, makes some big mistakes in the name of love. And Peter, the hero of Wed at Leisure is a reformed rake with a strong sense of duty.

Can you share with us your writing process?

I almost always start each book by writing either the introductory scene or the emotionally charged scene that most compelled me to write the story in the first place. Often times, since that emotionally charged scene comes partway through the book, I need to do quite a bit of rewriting, but it does help guide me and give me greater insight into the characters.

If you could describe your Bianca and Lucian of Woo’d in Haste in three words each, what would they be?

I think I’d use the same words for both Bianca and Lucian: young, impulsive, and confident.

How about Kate and Peter of Wed at Leisure? How would you describe them in three words each?

Kate is evolving, reflective, and stubborn. Peter is thoughtful, respectful and determined. (And yes, I know these adjectives go against everything we know of Shakespeare’s Pertruchio!)

If you could cast actors to play Bianca and Lucian, who would they be?

Romola Garai and Channing Tatum.

If you could cast actors to play Kate and Peter, who would they be?

Genevieve Bujold (from Anne of a Thousand Days) and Bradley Cooper.

I love the book covers of these two. The pastel colors really work beautifully. Do you play a part in the process of picking or designing your book covers?

Sometimes I have more of a role but in this case I just got to sit back and admire the fabulous work that Avon Impulse did!

If you’re not writing, what occupies your time?

My 7 month old baby!

Who are you favorite authors and their works?

Ah… I adore Carole Maso’s The American Woman in the Chinese Hat, Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Jane Austen’s Persuasion, Fanny Burney’s Evelina, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay, and Here be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman. As far as pure romance goes, I’ll just mention some of the classics: Black Lyon, Lost Lady and The Raider by Jude Deveraux, Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught, and Skye O’Malley by Bertrice Small.

Do you imagine yourself writing in another genre?

Yes! I have quite a few non historical romance projects on the back burner. But… for now my focus is historical romance.

What’s in store next for you?

Excerpt:

Excerpt from WOO’D IN HASTE:

“Bea.” She whirled around. There was Luc, calling her by that intimate name. He’d watched her so carefully. Knew her habits. Now here they were, alone, quite improperly. Her breath came shallow and fast. Her heart raced in her chest. Yet what she felt was not quite fear.

She opened her mouth to say something, to say anything that would make sense of this senseless moment. She noticed little things, like his hand that clenched and unclenched as he took a step closer. A step that started to crowd out the air between them, that made her gasp.

“Bianca, you must know—”

She’d taken a step forward, too, and the realization made her pause. She needed to think, reason, remember who she was and where she was, but all that seemed to matter was the line of his jaw, the warmth of his gaze, and the shape of his mouth.

“What must I know, Luc?” The husky timbre of her voice surprised her, but then there was no more room for surprise. No more room for anything but a strong, male embrace, for being enveloped by his warmth, for the touch of his lips on hers.

Stunned, she parted her own and then all conscious thought was gone.

Instead, she felt. Felt the sweep of his tongue, the rasp of his teeth. It was hot and all-consuming, and the sensation radiated straight down to the tips of her fingers and toes. There was a rhythm to his movements, and after a moment she followed, matched him, danced with him, even though their feet were still.

She stumbled back a step, the rush of air between them cooling her heated skin. Still dizzy from the embrace, reeling from pleasure, she stared up at his face. At first glance she had thought his features broad and plain, but now the angles and shadows were clearer to her, even if nothing else was.

Except the understanding that this kiss had been forbidden, should never have happened. That Luc had taken an enormous impropriety. She lifted her hand before she even consciously knew what she was doing. The slap resounded in the air.
