When she was nine-years-old, Katie knew she wanted Chris to give her her first kiss. It wasn’t because she was in love with him (no way, he was her best friend! Besides, she was in love with his fourteen-year-old big brother), it was because she could make him do anything she wanted.
Besides, it didn’t really mean anything. It was only a kiss after all.
But then things started to change. They grew up. They parted ways and went to different high schools. And other girls and boys—well, just one particular boy—came into the picture, throwing their lives upside down.
Told from the alternating points of view of Katie and Chris, this love story between two best friends will tug at your heartstrings and leave you thinking how the simplest things can mean so much.
I’d like to welcome Ines Bautista-Yao to Girl meets Books. She’ll be doing a guest post on the blog and talking about falling in love with your best friend.
Falling In Love with your Best Friend
by Ines Bautista-Yao
I didn’t want to write about best friends falling in love. I feel it’s a tired trope—so many books have been written about it already.
But here I am with this book—where the entire story is about this very thing I find almost cliché. Part of it is because I don’t really think my stories through before I write them. I just start and let things flow from there. But the better (and the real!) reason is because it is such a delicious situation! Even if I hate to admit it, I love reading about it, watching it happen on TV and in the movies, and seeing it happen in real life.
I mean, how exciting can it be when everyone’s feelings are already laid out on the table from the get-go? It’s so much more thrilling when you’re working so hard to hide just how strongly you feel for someone who has no clue, but loves you just the same—just not in the way you wished (ouch). All that longing, all that hoping, all those feels. How can there be a worse situation? You’re always with this person who thinks he knows you so well but really doesn’t. Because if he did, he’d know how you felt, right? And he’d love you right back. Not just as a friend either.
So you try so hard to act normally. You deny your deepest emotions. You do it for the sake of your friendship. But in the end, you can’t help yourself. All he has to do is take your hand, put his head on your shoulder, or even break down crying because a girl has broken his heart. And you cave. You break down too. You are overcome with just too much of this painful thing you loathe to call love—because what if he doesn’t love you back? That will be the end of your friendship. And the end of your life as you know it. It’s so much easier to fall in love with a boy you’d just met. It won’t be as heart wrenching if he rejects you. Your world will still keep spinning if he breaks your heart. At the very least, you will still have a best friend. But losing your best friend and the love of your life in one fell swoop? I think I’ve made my point.
And maybe, just maybe, this situation was easy for me to write because, years ago, I too fell in love with my best friend.
