Top Ten of 2014: Best Book Covers of 2014

top ten of 2014

Top Ten of 2014: A Week of Looking Back is a year-end meme hosted by Jamie @ Two Chicks On Books, Rachel @ Fiktshun, Mindy @ Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, and Nancy @ Tales of a Ravenous Reader

It’s Week #2 and we’re featuring the Best Book Covers of 2014. I guess I’m the type of reader who looks at the book cover and then immediately switches to the back cover to look at the blurb and then goes back to appreciate the book cover again. I seldom depend on the book covers to decide which books I read but I do appreciate a lovely cover.

a thousand pieces of you
A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU by Claudia Gray. Easily one of the best this year. I love the duality of the image, the colors, and how it just echoes the theme of the story. (My review)

blue lily, lily blue
BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE by Maggie Stiefvater. Granted, I’m only at Book 2, The Dream Thieves, but I love this cover already. It’s whimsical, colorful, and a bit magical. Don’t you think so too?

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

I always welcome fairy tale retellings so when I read about this retelling of The Beauty and the Beast, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the book and start reading.

All That Glows by Ryan Graudin

I haven’t actually read any book that’s mainly focused on faeries but the blurb of this book got me interested. Plus, I just love the cover! 🙂

The Break-up Artist by Philip Siegel

The premise sounds really intriguing and I wonder how the author will develop from there on. I have high hopes for this one.

Defy by Sara B. Larson

The bit about the love triangle still sort of turns me off but I’m willing to try this book because of the interesting plot. Please be good.

Twelve Steps by Veronica Bartles

The story has an interesting set-up, sort of like the ugly duckling taking matters into her own hands. I also hope this one delivers.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books on my Winter TBR

d32cf-toptentuesday2

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the gals at The Broke and the Bookish. For this week’s list: Books On My Winter TBR, although technically we don’t have winter where I come from. 🙂

TTT Winter TBR

#10    Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor – I have yet to read this highly recommended book and I can’t wait to catch up on this series.

#9       Foreplay by Sophie Jordan – I haven’t had the opportunity to read any of Sophie Jordan’s work yet and this compelling story has me in its grip.

#8       The Shadow Throne by Jennifer Nielsen – I can’t wait to see what Jennifer Neilsen has in store for her readers as she concludes her trilogy with the release of this book.

#7       Feel the Heat by Kate Meader – I just finished All Fired Up and enjoyed it so much that all I can say about Kate Meader’s books is: More. I Want More.

#6       Satisfaction by Sarah Mayberry – I’ve loved all the books that Sarah Mayberry has written and I can’t wait for her next book to come out in early January

#5       Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge – The release date for this book never seems to come any closer. I’m excited to try out Rosamund Hodge’s writing. I hope she delivers because she has an already compelling storyline.

#4       It Felt Like A Kiss by Sarra Manning – I haven’t read any of her  books yet but her name has been associated with a lot of starred reviews. When I read the book blurb for this one, I told myself I have got to read this one.

#3       Crash Into You by Katie McGarry – I know. I’m already at the back of the pack. I want a hard copy of this book and it’s still not available in our local bookstores. So I’m (im)patiently waiting.

#2       The Chocolate Temptation by Laura Florand – I’ve fangirl-ed a lot about how I love Laura Florand’s book. I can’t wait for her next book for release.

#1        The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan – December 17, why are you so far away? Courtney Milan writes one of the best historical romance stories there ever will be. Her latest series, The Brothers Sinister, is breathtaking.

I have one honorable mention here: Sarah MacLean‘s No Good Duke Goes Unpunished. I’m also (im)patiently waiting for my copy to arrive via Bookdepository. I have to read this before the year ends. I just have to..

There you go. What about you, guys? What are your picks for the weeks?

“Waiting On” Wednesday: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

New WoW

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights eagerly anticipated upcoming releases.

15839984Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Release Date: January 28, 2014

From Goodreads:

Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl’s journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.

Why am I waiting?

I love retellings. And I’m particularly enchanted with what the summary presents to me about this retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I’m already loving the obvious dynamics between the characters but I’m also looking forward to discovering the other layers of their relationship, beyond the ‘Beauty’ and the ‘Beast’ ideals. The blurb doesn’t say much about our ‘Beast’ Ignifex but I’m looking forward to learning more about him.

And just as I’ve gushed over this book’s cover in another post, I’ll gush over it again here. Don’t you just adore that cover? I’m getting the dark fairy tale-esque feeling just by looking at it.

What about you? What are you “waiting on” this Wednesday?

Eye-Catching Covers

It’s been said that you should never judge a book by its cover and I guess I adhere to that. I definitely read the summary first no matter how I like or don’t like the cover. Nevertheless, the book cover is a part of the book and it is what draws your eyes in at the outset.

Here are some of the covers that caught my eye this month. Click on the covers to learn more about these books.

I love the contrast of the dark red, violet, and black against the almost pale pastel blurry background. Irresistible, indeed.

17183419

I feel wistful looking at this cover. It sure does say where the story takes place but I love the silhouette of the city and the couple.

17970721

I love this painted cover. It makes me want to meet and learn more about this ‘man above reproach’ as the author dubs him. It’s a nice deviation from the usual HR covers.

15839984

Isn’t this cover just beautiful or what? I love how the petals imitate the winding staircase or the other way around. And the black and white contrast really works.

12711662

I love the brightness and lightness of this one. It sure does complement the ‘glow’ part in the title. And I love the eye make-up on the girl because it does make her seem like she’s this other-worldly being who’s glowing, which she probably is and probably does.

13574417

I’ve seen a dichotomy cover before and was not really a fan but this one works for me. It might be the feeling that I’m getting, which is that these two people, even though they are lying leisurely in their own worlds, so to speak, they want to break out and explore another world outside their own at the same time.

12558285 17449197

Then, there’s these two covers. They’re colorful and magical, but a little creepy at the same time. The facial expressions reflect exactly what the title says.

So there you go. Eye-catching covers this month. What about you? What covers caught your eyes lately?
