THE OPPORTUNIST

by Tarryn Fisher

the opportunistJessica nodded. “Yea, I, like, needed a change. I came here for a semester to try it out, but then I met my boyfriend and decided to stay.”
“Who’s your boyfriend?” I jabbed the button that would give me a Coke and bent at the knees to retrieve it from the bin.
Her face changed when she said his name. I hated her for it.
“Caleb Drake. He’s on the basketball team. He’s a really cool guy–total gentleman.”
Her voice was unbelievably annoying. “Yeah? That’s hard to find, guys nowadays are such…” I was trying to find the right word, the kind she would use, “stupid jerks,” I smiled.
Jessica nodded at me, her graceful eyebrows furrowed. I felt the denture-paste pull. She was accepting me into her “preindship.”
“Literally, I’m never letting him go. I’m gonna marry this boy.”
I hated it when literally was used for non-literal things. I popped the tab on my soda can and returned her grin.
Over my dead body… literally.

Why is this quote fantastic?

I finished this book last week and until today, this book keeps on haunting me. I’ll remember scenes from the book at random times during the day and it has really made a huge impact on me as a reader.

This quote was a flashback to high school when Olivia, the female main character is talking to Jessica, who’s her ex-boyfriend Caleb’s current girlfriend. What I love about this quote is that hint of the nasty and the fierce in the way Olivia thinks. She’s far from perfect and she would even admit to you that she’s not good at all but the beauty of Tarryn Fisher’s writing is that she writes these imperfect characters and still they grab you as a reader–they grab your attention, your sympathy, your empathy, your very emotions.

Book Summary:

Olivia Kaspen has just discovered that her ex -boyfriend, Caleb Drake, has lost his memory. With an already lousy reputation for taking advantage of situations, Olivia must decide how far she is willing to go to get Caleb back. Wrestling to keep her true identity and their sordid past under wraps, Olivia’s greatest obstacle is Caleb’s wicked, new girlfriend; Leah Smith. It is a race to the finish as these two vipers engage in a vicious tug of war to possess a man who no longer remembers them. But, soon enough Olivia must face the consequences of her lies, and in the process discover that sometimes love falls short of redemption.
